Basel, April 22, 2025 — Swiss biotech giant Roche has announced a landmark $50 billion investment plan to strengthen its pharmaceutical and diagnostic operations across the United States over the next five years. The investment, one of the largest ever made by a healthcare company in the U.S., will support a wave of new facilities, research centers, and manufacturing expansions.

A Nationwide Expansion Strategy

The initiative will span eight U.S. states, enhancing Roche’s presence through:

• A gene therapy manufacturing facility in Pennsylvania

• A new 900,000 sq. ft. production site (location to be announced) focused on next-generation weight loss treatments

• A glucose monitoring manufacturing plant in Indiana

• An advanced R&D center in Massachusetts for cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic research with a strong emphasis on AI-driven innovation

• Upgrades to existing R&D and manufacturing sites in California, Arizona, Indiana, Kentucky, Oregon, and New Jersey

In total, these efforts are expected to generate over 12,000 new jobs, including 1,000 direct hires and more than 6,500 construction-related positions.

Strengthening an Already Significant U.S. Footprint

Roche already operates 13 manufacturing sites and 15 R&D centers across the U.S., employing more than 25,000 people. This latest investment reaffirms the country’s strategic importance to Roche’s global operations.

CEO Thomas Schinecker emphasized the long-term vision behind this expansion:

“Our investments of USD 50 billion over the next five years will lay the foundation for our next era of innovation and growth, benefiting patients in the U.S. and around the world.”

The company also noted that, once all new manufacturing capacities are online, Roche will export more pharmaceuticals from the U.S. than it imports. Its diagnostics division already maintains a net export surplus.
