In a landmark move for the healthcare logistics sector, DHL Group has announced a €2 billion strategic investment into its DHL Health Logistics division. This bold initiative aims to supercharge the company’s global capabilities across the life sciences and healthcare supply chain—supporting everything from pharmaceutical distribution to advanced cell and gene therapies.

Set to unfold over the next five years, this initiative aligns with the company’s long-term “Strategy 2030”, aiming to deliver smarter, faster, and more sustainable healthcare logistics solutions worldwide.

Global Expansion for Local Impact

The investment will be spread strategically:

  • 50% in the Americas

  • 25% in the Asia Pacific

  • 25% in EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa)

This allocation reflects growing demand across diverse geographies for robust, compliant, and temperature-sensitive logistics infrastructure. DHL will strengthen its presence through:

  • New GDP-certified Pharma Hubs

  • Expanded cold chain storage capabilities

  • State-of-the-art temperature-controlled vehicles

  • Advanced active and passive packaging solutions

These enhancements are crucial for handling the increasing complexity of clinical trials, biopharma, and personalized medicine.

Supporting the Rise of Next-Gen Therapies

As advanced therapies—like cell and gene treatments—become more prevalent, so does the need for ultra-low temperature logistics. DHL’s investment focuses heavily on expanding high-quality cooling transport and storage systems, ensuring therapeutic integrity from production to patient.

Advanced IT systems will also be deployed, providing real-time visibility, ensuring regulatory compliance, and maintaining product traceability across global networks.

A Unified Health Logistics Brand

Under the new umbrella of DHL Health Logistics, the group is bringing together its extensive healthcare expertise to deliver:

  • Seamless end-to-end solutions

  • Simplified global coordination

  • Agile and responsive service lines

By integrating logistics for pharmaceuticals, biotech, medical devices, and clinical research, DHL aims to become a central pillar in the modern healthcare ecosystem.

DHL’s Vision: Purpose-Driven and Patient-Focused

Oscar de Bok, CEO of DHL Supply Chain, summarized the mission:

“Our strategic investment in life sciences and healthcare is driven by our customers’ mission: delivering essential, often life-saving products to people in need.”

With over 600 specialized facilities in nearly 130 countries, including 2.5 million square meters of temperature-controlled space, DHL is already a dominant force. Now, it plans to scale further, targeting an additional €5 billion in revenue by 2030.

The acquisition of CRYOPDP, a leading courier in clinical and biotech logistics, further strengthens DHL’s footprint, particularly in handling critical research samples and precision medicine shipments.
